Carnevale

Carnevale (English: Carnival) is a festive season which occurs after Epiphany and before Lent. The main events are usually in February. Carnevale typically involves costumes and a public celebration. The name Carnevale comes from the Italian carne levare, meaning “to remove meat”, since meat is prohibited during Lent.

Carnevale di Venezia or Carnival in Venice is attended every year by three million people. This event was first recorded in 1268 and thought to have started in 1162. Carnevale di Venezia is famous for its costumes and distinctive masks.

Carnevale di Acireale is considered Sicily’s most beautiful Carnival. Acireale is a magnificent Baroque city in the Province of Catania. Acireale’s Carnival boasts an ancient tradition, having begun in the 16th Century. The parades of outrageous floats are a draw for thousands of tourists .
